Standard FUE hair transplant requires the donor zone (back of the scalp) to be shaved to allow precise extraction of individual follicles. For patients who need to maintain their existing hair length — for professional, personal or discretion reasons — unshaven FUE offers an alternative.
In U-FUE, small sections of the donor zone are trimmed only in the specific areas where extraction will occur, while surrounding hair remains at its natural length. This hair covers the trimmed areas immediately after surgery. The result: no visible signs of surgery when leaving the clinic.

The Middle Option — Partial Shave
Unshaven and fully shaved are not the only two choices. A partial approach shaves a strip inside the donor zone that the hair above it covers completely when worn down — invisible in normal wear, while restoring most of the graft ceiling that a fully unshaven session gives up.
For patients whose plan needs more than the U-FUE ceiling but who still need to look untouched on Monday morning, this is usually the answer. It is worth raising at consultation, because patients who ask for "unshaven" often mean "nothing visible" — and those are not the same request.
Recovery When You Keep Your Hair Long
The healing itself is no different from a shaved procedure — the recovery timeline does not change because the hair was left long. What changes is the handling.
- Washing takes longer. Crusts have to be softened and lifted through surrounding hair rather than off an open scalp. Rushing it is how grafts get dislodged.
- Crusts are harder to see. They are also harder to check, so the follow-up photographs the clinic asks for matter more in an unshaven case than a shaved one.
- No styling products until cleared. Long hair invites the usual routine back early; gel, wax and dry shampoo wait until you are told otherwise.
- Shedding is less obvious. Transplanted hairs still shed at weeks two to four, but the surrounding hair masks it — a comfort, not a difference in the process.
