| Norwood Stage | Hair loss pattern | Typical graft range |
|---|---|---|
| I–II | Minimal recession — early hairline change | 500–1,200 |
| III | Visible temple recession, beginning mid-scalp | 1,500–2,500 |
| III Vertex | Crown thinning beginning | 1,800–2,800 |
| IV | Significant frontal + crown loss, bridge remaining | 2,500–3,500 |
| V | Large bald area, narrow bridge | 3,000–4,500 |
| VI | Very large bald area, no bridge | 4,000–5,500 |
| VII | Most extensive — rim only | 5,000–7,000 (multi-session) |
These are averages. Individual variation is significant — a large scalp at Norwood IV may need 500 more grafts than a small scalp at the same stage.

Hair calibre: Coarser, thicker hair covers more surface area per graft. Fine hair requires more grafts for equivalent visual density.
Target density: A 30 FU/cm² result looks natural but not dense. A 50+ FU/cm² result looks fuller. Higher density = more grafts.
Scalp size: A large bald area at Norwood IV needs more grafts than a small bald area at the same stage.
Donor density: Patients with dense donor hair can yield more grafts. Patients with thinner donor hair may have a lower safe extraction ceiling.
At Hairmedico, every consultation includes a trichoscopy donor density scan. This measures actual follicular units per cm² in the donor zone — not a population average estimate. Combined with recipient zone surface area measurement and target density discussion, this produces a precise graft plan.

A free preliminary estimate is available from 3 photographs via WhatsApp. The estimate includes Norwood stage assessment, approximate graft range and package pricing. No commitment required.
It depends on your Norwood stage, scalp size and target density. Norwood III typically requires 1,500–2,500 grafts; Norwood IV needs 2,500–3,500; Norwood V–VI needs 3,500–5,000+. Only a trichoscopy assessment gives a precise figure.
A graft is a follicular unit — a natural grouping of 1–4 hair follicles as they occur in the scalp. Each graft contains 1–4 individual hairs. 2,000 grafts typically yields 4,000–6,000 individual hairs depending on your follicle grouping pattern.
No. Extracting more grafts than the donor zone can safely provide leads to visible donor thinning — a permanent outcome. The right number of grafts is the number that achieves your restoration goals while preserving donor integrity for potential future sessions.
