All Articles →A hair transplant procedure takes 6–10 hours. The recovery takes 12–14 months. Understanding this timeline — and what to expect at each stage — is the most important preparation a patient can do before surgery.

The most common source of post-operative anxiety is the shock loss phase at weeks 2–4. Understanding it before surgery — rather than encountering it unexpectedly — makes the difference between a patient who panics and one who progresses calmly through recovery.
Mild swelling around the forehead and eyes is normal and peaks at day 2–3. Sleep with your head elevated at 45 degrees to reduce swelling. Small scabs form at each implanted follicle in the recipient area. The donor area has tiny puncture marks — typically invisible at normal hair length.
Scabs begin to loosen during gentle washing. Continue the washing protocol as instructed. Do not pick or scratch. The recipient area looks reddish-pink — this is normal and fades over the following 2–4 weeks.
Most scabs have resolved by day 10–12. The scalp surface is clear. Mild redness may remain for another 2 weeks. You can return to light desk work by day 7.
Between weeks 2 and 4, the transplanted hairs shed. This is called shock loss (or effluvium) and it is completely normal — it happens in the majority of patients and is not a sign that anything has gone wrong.

The reason: the transplanted follicle is adjusting to its new location. The shaft (visible hair) sheds while the root — the living follicle — remains intact beneath the scalp surface. The same biological process causes some patients to also shed native hairs around the transplanted area temporarily.
Every hair that sheds will grow back permanently. The follicle root is alive. This is the stage where patient education makes the most difference — patients who understand shock loss experience it as expected and manageable. Patients who are not prepared often present with significant anxiety that, while entirely understandable, is not medically warranted.
Months 1–3 (dormant phase): Little visible change. Follicles are in their resting (telogen) phase, rebuilding before entering active growth.
Months 3–4 (emergence): Fine, soft new hairs appear. The hair is thin initially and may grow in slightly irregular directions.
Months 5–7 (density building): Hairs thicken and density improves noticeably. Most patients at 6 months see 50–60% of their final result. This is typically the first point at which other people notice a visible difference.
Months 8–10 (maturing): Texture normalises. Hairs reach closer to their natural calibre. 70–80% of final result visible by month 9.
Months 12–14 (final result): Full density achieved. The transplanted hair is permanent and behaves identically to natural hair.
| Activity | Resume after |
|---|---|
| Office / desk work | 5–7 days |
| Light walking | Day 3 |
| Driving | Day 5 |
| Light exercise (yoga) | 2 weeks |
| Gym / weight training | 4 weeks |
| Swimming | 4 weeks |
| Contact sports | 6 weeks |
| Direct sun (scalp) | 4 weeks |
| Haircut (scissors) | 4 weeks |
| Clippers (short cut) | 3 months |
| Hair colouring | 3 months |
The transplanted hair is permanent. However, your non-transplanted native hair will continue to follow its natural progression. This is why medical management (minoxidil, finasteride) after surgery is often recommended — to preserve native hair and reduce the future area that may require a second procedure.

Desk work: 5–7 days. Physical work: 14 days. Gym: 21 days. Scabs shed by Day 10–14. Most colleagues would not notice the procedure by Day 14. Full visual recovery (no redness, no scabs) is complete by 3–4 weeks.
Shock loss is the temporary shedding of transplanted hairs 2–6 weeks after surgery. The follicle enters telogen (resting phase) due to surgical trauma and sheds the hair shaft. The follicle remains alive and regrows from month 3–4. Shock loss is normal and universal.
New growth typically begins at months 3–5. Month 6: 40–60% of final density visible. Month 9–10: 80–85%. Final result: months 12–14. The dormant phase (months 1–3) is normal and expected — not a sign of failure.
Light walking is fine from Day 2. Gym and cardio: wait 21 days (sweat and elevated blood pressure risk graft damage). Contact sports: 30 days minimum. Swimming: 4 weeks (chlorine and immersion risk during early healing).
Day 2: first wash at clinic with Hairmedico team. Days 3–14: dilute LOREW Paris shampoo in cup of water, pour gently over recipient zone, no rubbing. Let foam sit 2 minutes. Rinse with gentle low-pressure water. Pat dry — no rubbing. From Day 15: gentle normal washing.
