All Articles →A hair graft — also called a follicular unit — is a naturally occurring group of 1 to 4 hair follicles that grow together from the same follicular structure. When surgeons talk about graft counts, they are counting these groups, not individual hairs.

The average graft contains 2–2.5 hairs. This means a procedure of 2,000 grafts typically yields 4,000–5,000 individual hairs — the distinction matters when comparing clinic quotes.
Always ask clinics for graft count, not hair count. Some clinics quote procedures in individual hairs to make numbers appear larger.
The primary factor determining how many grafts you need is your Norwood stage — the extent of hair loss. These are clinical estimates; individual anatomy, hair characteristics and coverage goals will affect the final number.
| Norwood Stage | Area affected | Typical graft range | Sessions |
|---|---|---|---|
| II | Minor temple recession | 800 – 1,500 | 1 |
| III | Deeper recession, early crown | 1,500 – 2,500 | 1 |
| III Vertex | Crown thinning predominant | 1,500 – 2,200 | 1 |
| IV | Hairline + significant crown | 2,500 – 3,500 | 1 |
| V | Hairline and crown converging | 3,000 – 4,500 | 1–2 |
| VI | Large confluent area | 4,000 – 5,500 | 1–2 |
| VII | Extensive — only sides remain | 5,000 – 6,500+ | 2–3 |
These figures assume standard scalp coverage goals. A more conservative hairline design requires fewer grafts. A higher density target requires more.
The number of grafts is only part of the equation. Density — how many grafts are placed per square centimetre — determines how thick and natural the result looks.

A 40–60 FU/cm² density produces a natural result in most patients — the human eye cannot detect the difference from native density at this level. Attempting to exceed the donor zone capacity is the most common cause of overharvested, depleted donor areas in revision cases.
Every graft extracted is a graft the donor zone can never replace. The question is not "how many can we take" but "how many should we take" to protect the patient for life. — Dr. Arslan Musbeh
The maximum number of grafts available from your scalp is determined by your donor zone density and the surface area of the safe donor zone. This varies significantly between individuals.
Average donor zone: approximately 6,000–8,000 extractable grafts over a lifetime. High-density donors may yield 9,000–10,000. Low-density donors may be limited to 4,000–5,000.
This is why donor assessment — not just loss assessment — is critical in surgical planning. A Norwood VI patient with a high-density donor can achieve excellent coverage in one session. The same patient with a limited donor zone may require a more conservative plan across two sessions.
Additional donor sources: in some cases, body hair from the beard, chest or legs can supplement scalp grafts. Body hair grafts are coarser and shorter, typically suited to adding density to the mid-scalp rather than the hairline.
An accurate graft estimate cannot be given from a standard photograph alone. It requires:

After researching countless clinics, I specifically didn't want a "hair mill." Dr. Arslan is hands-on throughout the entire process. I came from Australia and the experience was seamless.
Dr. Arslan was present throughout the surgery and personally performed the majority of key procedures. His professionalism and dedication made all the difference.
I already see good hair growth after only 17 weeks. The professionalism of the team and facilities was excellent.
Dr. Arslan was incredibly professional — he explained all procedures clearly. The clinic was spotless and the staff were super friendly.
From first contact, communication was prompt, transparent and efficient. My expectations were surpassed by the services and attention I received.
After 5 years of research I chose Hairmedico. Even on a basic package, Dr. Arslan performed the critical incision phase himself.
A graft is a follicular unit — a natural grouping of 1–4 hair follicles as they occur in the scalp. Each graft is extracted individually in FUE. 2,000 grafts typically yields 4,000–6,000 individual hairs depending on your average follicular unit hair count.
Graft requirements depend on Norwood stage, scalp size, hair calibre, and target density. Norwood III: 1,500–2,500. Norwood IV: 2,500–3,500. Norwood V: 3,000–4,500. Dr. Arslan calculates a precise number from trichoscopy assessment — free with 3 photographs via WhatsApp.
90%+ is good; 95%+ is excellent. At Hairmedico, Dr. Arslan achieves 92–96% documented graft survival. Budget technician-run clinics average 60–75%. The difference in a 3,000-graft session: over 800 fewer viable follicles.
Yes. Over-extraction depletes the donor zone permanently and cannot be corrected. Safe single-session limits are 3,000–4,500 grafts for most patients. Dr. Arslan's Algorithmic FUE approach plans within lifetime donor budgets, never over-extracts.
