Standard FUE vs Afro-adapted FUE

Standard FUE was developed and refined primarily for straight and wavy hair — follicles with a straight or gently curved path that a punch can follow without cutting across the follicle. Applied to Afro hair without modification, standard FUE produces transection rates of 30–80%: the majority of extracted grafts are damaged or destroyed before implantation.

Afro-adapted FUE addresses this through four specific modifications: punch size, entry angle, extraction depth, and graft handling protocol. Each modification targets a different aspect of the curved follicle extraction problem.

Dr. Arslan Musbeh has treated patients with Afro-textured, Type 3C–4C and tightly coiled hair from West Africa, Central Africa, the UK, France and the Caribbean. His adapted FUE technique accounts for the C-shaped follicle curvature unique to Afro hair — minimising transection rates that conventional punches cannot avoid. As a FUE Europe Full Member with 17+ years and 4,500+ personal cases, Dr. Arslan is one of the few Istanbul surgeons with documented expertise specifically in Afro-textured hair restoration.

Punch size — why diameter matters for Afro hair

Standard FUE uses punches of 0.7–0.8mm diameter. These work well for straight follicles of 0.5–0.7mm diameter — the punch is slightly larger than the follicle and can extract it cleanly.

Afro hair follicles are physically larger — their diameter reflects the larger cross-section of a coiled hair shaft, and the curved root structure requires a wider extraction path. Using a 0.75mm punch on a 0.9mm Afro follicle compresses and damages the follicle wall during extraction.

At Hairmedico, Dr. Arslan uses 0.9–1.0mm punches for Afro hair. This matches the physical dimensions of the follicle and allows clean extraction without compressive damage.

Entry angle — following the curve, not the exit

For straight hair, the punch entry angle follows the visible hair exit angle at the skin surface — which corresponds to the underlying follicle direction. For Afro hair, the visible exit angle does not indicate the follicle direction beneath the surface.

The follicle bends after exiting the skin. A punch inserted to follow the surface exit angle will travel in one direction, while the follicle has already curved in another direction beneath the dermis. Cutting straight down at the surface exit angle reliably transects the follicle at the curve apex.

Dr. Arslan uses a modified entry approach: initial punch insertion matches the exit angle, but depth is limited to 1.5–2mm. Follicle mobilisation then follows lateral oscillation rather than further downward pressure, allowing the punch to follow the natural curve rather than cutting across it.

Implantation — maintaining curl pattern in the recipient zone

Successful implantation of Afro grafts requires creating recipient channels that match the expected growth direction and the natural hairline aesthetics of the individual patient. At Hairmedico, Dr. Arslan creates a hairline that respects the characteristic of Afro male and female hairlines — typically lower, straighter at the frontal zone for men, and with a smooth uninterrupted curve for women — rather than applying the M-shaped hairline more common in European patients.

Each channel is created at an angle that allows the coiled hair to emerge at its natural exit angle. Implanting a coiled follicle at the wrong angle produces straight-appearing growth in a section of the hairline — immediately visible and difficult to correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can people with Afro hair get hair transplants?

Yes. Afro-textured hair transplant requires adapted FUE technique because the follicles are C-shaped (curved) rather than straight. Dr. Arslan is specifically experienced with Type 3C–4C hair from West African, Central African, Caribbean and UK African patient backgrounds.

What is different about Afro hair transplant?

Afro follicles grow in a curved C-shape beneath the skin. Standard straight punch extraction risks transecting (cutting) the follicle. Adapted curved punch technique, specific punch angles, and slower extraction pace are required. Dr. Arslan performs all Afro extractions personally.

Is keloid formation a risk for Afro hair transplant patients?

Patients of African descent have a higher genetic predisposition to keloid formation. At Hairmedico, every Afro hair transplant consultation includes keloid history assessment and risk discussion. Smaller punch sizes, conservative technique, and careful post-operative care minimise this risk.

Can traction alopecia be treated with hair transplant?

Yes, when the underlying tension cause has been eliminated and the condition has been stable for 12+ months. Traction alopecia from braids, locs, weaves or extensions can be surgically restored once the hair loss pattern is stable and the follicles in the damaged zone are confirmed inactive by trichoscopy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a hair transplant cost in Turkey?

Hairmedico all-inclusive: price on request for 2,000–3,500 grafts including surgery, 5-star hotel, transfers, PRP and 12-month follow-up.

Is hair transplant permanent?

Yes. Transplanted follicles are DHT-resistant and grow permanently for the patient's lifetime.

What is the recovery time?

Desk work: 5–7 days. Scabs shed by Day 10–14. New growth from months 3–5. Final result months 12–14.

Who performs surgery at Hairmedico?

Dr. Arslan Musbeh personally — every extraction, every channel, every graft. One patient per day.

Is Turkey safe for hair transplant?

Yes, with an accredited surgeon-led clinic. Verify FUE Europe membership, Ministry of Health registration, and confirm the surgeon personally operates.
