How chemical relaxers damage hair and follicles
Chemical relaxers (lye and no-lye relaxers) work by breaking the disulfide bonds in the hair shaft, permanently straightening the curl. But misapplication, overprocessing, scalp burns or the combination of relaxers with other chemical or mechanical stress can damage follicles permanently.

What is reversible and what is permanent
The majority of relaxer-related hair changes — shaft weakness, breakage, dryness — are not permanent hair loss. They affect the existing hair strand but leave the follicle intact. Discontinuing relaxers and implementing a protein and moisture recovery regime typically restores hair health within 6–18 months.

Surgery at 20 is generally not recommended. The hair loss pattern at 20 may not be fully established, and a hairline designed for early loss may look wrong as further recession occurs.
